About · Aesthete

Pocket tees, painted from life.

Aesthete is a small-batch apparel studio giving voice and presence to the majesty of the kingdoms of life, one species at a time.

№ 01

Painted

Every species begins with a long look at a real creature. Hours in the blind, at the river, in the zoo when that is the only honest way to meet a particular animal face to face. We paint from observation, never from stock.

№ 02

Cropped

Great care is taken to capture the essence: the plumage, the coat, the feather, the scale. Then the painting is cropped to the square of a tee's pocket. The crop is the discipline and the gift: forced to leave most of a creature out of the frame, you learn what the creature actually is.

№ 03

Printed

Printed in small batches on heavyweight cotton. Every tee ships with a field tag: kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species, plus the creature's origin mapped to a small black silhouette of its home continent.

Why a field tag?

Taxonomy is the map of how any single creature is related to every other creature. A family tree reaching back through deep time to a single ancestor we all share. The painting is the particular. The taxonomy is the vast. You need both to see an animal clearly.

Wonder without structure is sentiment. Structure without wonder is a spreadsheet. A shirt, at its best, is the handshake between them.

Know a species we should paint?

The menagerie grows. Every field tag started as a suggestion: from a friend, a customer, a biologist, a kid who couldn't stop talking about a moth.
